BEGINNER I, II and III
In Beginner I, II and III, students will learn about the foundational elements of visual arts: shading, volume, the effective use of light and shadow, perspective, proportion and composition. Students will have an opportunity to learn to work with graphite pencils, charcoal, watercolour pencils and ink. Students will also be introduced to acrylic and watercolour painting through a series of exercises that will teach them how to create monochromatic colour schemes, which are derived from a single base hue, and then extended using its shades, tones and tints. The objective is to give students a firm grounding in the elements of fine art that are foundational to any art project and their future fine art education.
In Beginner I, students will start by drawing and painting simple objects, such as spheres and cubes, later moving on to easy-to-draw household objects and fruit. In Beginner II, they will learn to depict more complex objects grouped in more demanding compositions (still life). In Beginner III, students will begin working on still more complex still life compositions and will start to explore landscapes.
The teacher will help you select the appropriate course materials.
Beginner I, II and III take forty six hours each to complete. The suggested time frame for the completion of each level is two classes per week for a semester.
INTERMEDIATE I, II and III
In Intermediate I, II and III, students will build on their skills in the foundational elements of visual art that they learned in Beginner I, II and III; however, they will use more advanced methods, techniques and media, including oil. They will also acquire a new set of skills needed for figure drawing and portraiture. They will study human anatomy, sketch, draw and paint the clothed and nude human figure and will start working on portraits.
In Intermediate I, students will be introduced to colour theory and various techniques of painting with acrylics and watercolours; the focus will be on still life and landscape. In Intermediate II, while deepening their skills in drawing, as well as painting with acrylics and watercolours, students will be introduced to portraiture and figure drawing. In Intermediate III, students will be introduced to oil painting. They will complete two oil paintings: a portrait or a figure drawing and a still life.
For portraits and figure studies, students will work from a photo reference and/or model. (There may be a fee for models.) The teacher will help you select the appropriate materials.
Intermediate I, II and III take forty six hours each to complete. The suggested time frame for the completion of each level is two classes per week for a semester.
